366 Days Later – Thoughts on Japan

It’s March 10th, 2011 and I am thinking of booking a flight to Japan. It’s not that I could really afford that vacation, but I am in need of a break. I have earned enough frequent flyer miles in order to go to Tokyo for less than 300€ – fair enough. It’s already 10 pm and I’ve been looking for half an hour but somehow I can’t really decide on booking. I’ll decide this weekend whether to fly or not.

Not even 12 hours later I knew I wouldn’t be flying.

Back in March I was totally shocked when I heard about the Earthquake and the Tsunami in Japan, probably, like many of you. Probably even a bit more than most of you as I had been there and met great people, living as less as 50 kilometres Northeast of Tokyo.

Even bigger the shock, as on the day before, March 10th, I was looking for a ticket to fly to Japan.

If you are able to spend some time in Japan in spring, like I did, try to be there end of march or even better beginning of April. Depending on which part of this country you want to see, the cherry blossom will be a bit sooner or later. It’s a great time to welcome the warmer part of the year outside and have a picnic at the park.

It’s hard to believe how such a short time can give you so much energy and joy. After almost three months I was able to return to Japan and I felt like home.

My friend was waiting for me and we spend some really nice days in 狭山市.

It have been some months since I visited Tokyo and I’m glad to say I’m going back. There are many memories related to Japan although I didn’t even spend a month there. Here’s a summary of my first three weeks Japan in my life.
